The Veendam guests have an opportunity to take a walking tour of Ile Royale which takes approximately 2 hours. The islands used to be a prison and are famous from the movie the Papillion. While walking through the island, one can see the 1928 lighthouse, a helipad, and a modern radio/radar tracking station of the European Space Agency where scientists monitor Ariane rocket launches from Kourou on the French Guiana mainland. You can also visit the ruins of the prisoners’ quarters, a former convent and a hospital.
